Hush Little Baby

napping baby girl

Per the recommendations of The Sleep Lady in her book,  I started singing a lullaby to Baby Girl to cue her that it was bedtime/naptime. I never did that with my other two, but that’s probably because the only way to get them to fall asleep was at the breast. Thankfully, I’ve managed to do things a bit differently (thus far) with Baby Girl, and she doesn’t always require nursing to fall asleep.

I sing the tune Hush Little Baby with lyrics from the book Hush Little Baby by author Silvia Long, which I love. This youtube video review gives you a glimpse into the book’s beautiful illustrations and talks about how neat Silvia Long’s lyrics are because they promote a closeness to nature which stands in stark contrast to the original lyrics to the classic lullaby.

Here’s what I sing to Baby Girl at least once a day if not more…

Hush little baby, don’t say a word,

Mama’s going to (gonna) show you a hummingbird.

If that hummingbird should fly,

Mama’s gonna show you the evening sky.

When the nighttime shadows fall,

Mama’s gonna hear the crickets call.

While their song drifts from afar,

Mama’s gonna search for a shooting star.

When that star has dropped from view,

Mama’s gonna read a book with you.

The book goes on for several more verses, although I have not memorized all of them yet.

Mrs. Sayuri took this photo. She jumps at the chance to take a photo with my DSLR camera. She can barely manage to hold it’s bulk in her hands and click the shutter button at the same time, but for a 5 year old she does great! As you can see…she struggles with keeping it [...]

In August, we finished reading (for the second time) the first book in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House Book Series, Little House in the Big Woods (one of my favorites by the way). In there we read about how Laura and her sister Mary do their hair up in rags to make them all curly [...]

decorated cupcake cookies

My mom made these pretty cupcake cookies and I insisted that she let me photograph them. I love the colors and her designs. They have a very playful look about them. Cookies or Cupcakes I can’t decide which I like better…cookies in the shape of cupcakes or actual cupcakes! It’s definitely a toss up.
