Ball of Fluff

blowing a dandelion puff

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale):  A yellow blossom matures into a puff ball.  The white fuzz is attached to the seed and acts as a parachute.  The wind catches it and can carry the seed great distances.

I noticed a dandelion puff growing right along the walkway when I walked from our house to our covered patio to hang laundry. While still finishing my task, I heard a certain little girl’s voice excitedly talking about a new flower she’d found and picked. Observant girl that she is, she’d spotted it on her way out to “find” me.

I enjoyed telling her that this flower was special and was for blowing. She loves to blow bubbles, candle flames out – you name it.

She had fun making some very concerted efforts and succeeded in blowing off a few seeds. Then she enlisted my help and we blew off a couple more, before she tired of it all together.

Those seeds were hanging on pretty tightly! I was surprised. I think the dandelion puff wasn’t quite “ripe for the picking” and needed a bit more time before it was ready to be blown.
