Today’s image is Mr. Happy Feet beside a pile of pine cones that his big sister (Mrs. Sayuri) gathered. We went outside to find pine cones to bring inside and examine. At the point when this photo was taken, his little fingers were freezing and he was very ready to go inside.
Upon examination, Mrs. Sayuri found out that pine seeds “have wings”. They flutter to the ground similar to maple seeds AKA maple keys. We discovered that pine cones are covered in “scales” which cover the seeds like little blankets and when they are ripe, they pop open and allow the seeds to fall out.
I like this Seed of the Week post from the blog Growing With Science which focuses on pine seeds. There’s a fun experiment on there that you can do with pine cones and water. Sounds like something we might have to try this week along with trying to identify what kind of pine tree these cones came from.
Nice-I like the expression on Mr. Happy Feet’s face.
Good post. I learned things I did not know. Love the picture.
Good morning,
I hope you enjoy the project. I am going to guess you have spruce tree cones there, and really going out on a “limb,” possibly Norway spruce (based on the size).
Have fun!
We did the project today although our cones didn’t do much closing. At first we thought it was a pine, but then we looked at the needles and they were indeed spruce needles – I learned how to identify the differences between spruces and pines. We’ll have to look up Norway spruce trees and see what they are described as. Thanks!
