“Worming” around our house means digging for earthworms. When we go over to visit my parent’s house, Mrs. Sayuri and Pop-Pop (my dad) go “worming” in their back yard. She gets so excited when they find one. And surprisingly she giggles with delight when they squirm and squiggle in her hands. She often describes them as “cute”!
She is very protective of them and makes sure that they are not out of the cool soil too long so that they don’t die.
The big ones are “papa” worms, the medium ones are “mamas” and the little ones are most certainly “babies”. One day when she’s a bit older we’ll talk about the specifics of earthworm gender (possessing both male and female reproductive organs at the same time)…might be a bit confusing for a three and a half year old just yet.
I found this great free earthworm lapbook online. I want to do some of the activities with Mrs. Sayuri soon. I drew her a couple images to color of worms since our printer is not working. She loved them and had a blast drawing a bow and dress on the “mommy” worm and a hat and shirt on the “daddy” worm.
I asked Bear if she’d like to dig for worms and she said, “No thank you!” I’m glad Mrs. Sayuri is enjoying it though.
Very Sweet. Tell Mrs. Sayuri I found a fat earthworm in the garden dirt the other day. He/she seems quite happy to be there. I also saw a little toad just inside the barn door. I did not disturb him and wonder if he too found his way to the garden. All of YHWH’s creatures have a job to do.
Well, I see that the tradition of caring for and respecting worms continues in the family. 🙂 I used to weed the lawn with your mother because she didn’t want to use chemicals that would destroy the worms. I also take care around the yard. What nice memories!
